BM is language of communication and knowledge acquisition

KAPIT: The national language, Bahasa Malaysia is a language for communication and to acquire knowledge.
The Education Department had made full use of the national language as the medium of instruction from Primary One to university, said Sarawak Education Department director Mohammed Sabil the just concluded state-level Chinese medium Primary School Bahasa Malaysia oratory contest 2003 held here. Student must master the language to communicate and acquire knowledge, he added.
He said the Education Department was making every effort to promote Bahasa Malaysia and the Bahasa Malaysia oratory contest was just one of the many activities organised to promote the national language.
The oratory contest was to encourage the common usage and to make students of the chinese medium primary schools fluent in the national language, he said.
The competition was also to scout young talent in public speaking and to build self-confidence among the participants, he added.
He said the contest would be a yearly event to allow students from the Chinese-medium schools to speak in the national language.
Sarikei Division emerged the overall winner winning the oratory and written contest.
The contest, organised by the Kapit Education Department, was held on August 20 where 11 speakers from various divisions took to the stage in the finals.
In the oratory contest; Fariz Fadzuan Fahmi of SK Methodist Anglo Chinese, Sarikei was the champion, Wendy anak Res of SJK Bintawa, Kuching/Kota Samarahan first runner-up and Karyn Julan Luhat from SK © Hock Lam, Kapit came third.
In the written contest; Janice Wong Kee Wei of Sibu was the champion, Alma Najlan Kang of Sri Aman the first runner-up and Lim Kee Chin of Sarikei in third.
